Latest update: August 25th, 2025

History
Over the years, State Parks has undertaken multiple maintenance projects at Emma Wood State Beach - North Beach to address ongoing coastal erosion and storm impacts. These efforts included rip-rap reinforcement in 2010 and 2014, sinkhole mitigation in 2016 and 2025, and storm damage restoration in 2017. Despite these interventions, recent severe storms and extreme weather events, including king tide events in February 2024, have accelerated damage to the area. As a result, a more comprehensive and long-term roadway repair is now required.

The Project
The Emma Wood State Beach - North Beach Entrance Road Repair Project will widen the entrance road, demolish and remove damaged concrete sections, and remove and repair sections of the existing sheet pile retaining wall to ensure entrance road strength and stability to preserve future access and adapt to sea level rise.

Timeline

Progress
Full closure of Emma Wood State Beach - North Beach for roadway repairs begins Monday, August 25th, 2025. The park will remain closed until June 2026.

Future Projects
Once the Emma Wood State Beach - North Beach Entrance Road Improvement Project and CalTrans Highway 1 Overpass Demolition are complete, State Parks will continue to address road safety issues within the campground area, which must be resolved before camping operations can resume. These future projects include:

  • Coordinating with Ventura County for a temporary re-routing of North Coast sewer lines
  • Remove and replace a failed culvert
  • Repair and replace a failed seawall
  • Reopen the campground
