California State Parks Recommends $6.7 Million in Grants to Develop and Renovate Local Recreational Trails

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks has recommended $6.7 million to the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreation Trails grant program (RTP) for seven local nonmotorized trail projects. Cities such as Galt in Sacramento County would receive funding to develop 1,500 linear feet of paved trail extending the Emerald Vista Trail in two sections. In Santa Clara County, the City of Gilroy would be able to construct a new 4,500 linear foot multiuse trail segment with educational signage and distance markers from Kern Avenue to Day Road.

WEAVERVILLE, Calif.— History will come alive when a traditional Chinese lion dance will be presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (SHP) to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. This free special event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, will take place in front of the “Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds,” a Taoist temple built in 1874 that is the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California.

California State Parks Provides Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near Palisades Tahoe

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif.— California State Parks today confirmed a fatal shooting at Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley. Around 10 a.m. this morning, a State Park Peace Officer (SPPO) attempted to stop a vehicle that was involved in a carjacking in Tahoe City. That pursuit was terminated in a traffic collision near Olympic Valley Inn at Palisades Tahoe. The subject exited the vehicle armed with a knife and an officer-involved shooting took place involving the SPPO, just as a California Highway Patrol officer arrived to assist. Officers provided medical aid to the subject, but despite their efforts the subject succumbed to his injuries. The public is advised to avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks today announced a new approach to reserving the highly sought after Steep Ravine Cabins at Mount Tamalpais State Park. Using a lottery-style system to make a reservation, the department’s new pilot program aims to enhance access and equity by allowing outdoor enthusiasts to apply for free for a reservation drawing up to eight months in advance. The drawings are selected randomly and conducted seven months ahead of the reservation dates through California’s state park reservation system, ReserveCalifornia.
