WEAVERVILLE — California State Parks and its partner, the Weaverville Joss House Association, invite the public to watch history come alive with a traditional Lunar New Year celebration and Lion Danceat the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (SHP). This annual free event will take place Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Year of the Fire Horse begins Feb. 17 and represents a vibrant energy characterized by independence, adventure and passion. While there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, it’s believed that lions will preserve peace and tranquility in the community and prevail over all evil to bring joy and happiness in the new year. After the lion dance, there will be a traditional firecracker display, followed by a traditional dragon dance by the Eastern Ways Martial Arts School. Refreshments will include green tea ice cream and specialty hot tea and fortune cookies provided by the Weaverville Joss House Association.

Lunar New Year crafts for children and guided tours of the Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds (Cloud Forest Temple), the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California, will be offered throughout the celebration.
