STATE PARK INTERPRETER I (PI) - K-12 Access Coordinator

Interpreter with propThe interpretation office at Columbia State Historic Park is looking for a State Park Interpreter I (PI) to provide Gold Rush era cultural interpretation and education programs to K-12 students from across California via distance learning platforms as well as in-person programs

Columbia SHP is a popular location for 4th grade field trips as it is one of the best preserved Gold Rush towns in California and provides teachers multiple opportunites to connect students to the past as well as support curriculum standards. This position will be responsible for the implementation of the parks PORTS (Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students®) Program, a popular distance learning opportunity for classrooms.  They will also establish and maintain cooperative relations with California’s K-12 education community to enhance digital engagement and in-person school group interpretation opportunities at Columbia State Historic Park. This position will work alongside state park rangers, maintenance and local partners to coordinate interpretive operations within the park’s historic Gold Rush era buildings.

The reporting location for this position is Columbia State Historic Park in Columbia, CA. Position may work at other units in the sector as directed. The State Park Interpreter I (PI) will work under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III of the Central Valley District.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: One year of experience in research and development of historical or natural resource interpretive programs. Experience working with kids.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in interpretation, social sciences, natural sciences communications, or closely related fields. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year for year basis.)

Exam: Successfully complete the State Park Interpreter I exam and be listed. 

Physical work can include working outdoors in inclement weather conditions and moving heavy doors.
