Founded in 1967, Anza-Borrego Foundation (ABF) is the official nonprofit partner of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, working to protect, preserve, and celebrate one of the most remarkable desert landscapes in the world.

ABF supports the Park through land conservation, education, research, volunteerism, community engagement, and direct support. What began as a grassroots effort to acquire privately owned lands from willing sellers within the Park has grown into a multifaceted organization dedicated to ensuring Anza-Borrego remains protected and accessible for future generations.

ABF has helped conserve more than 58,000 acres of land for permanent protection, preserving critical wildlife habitat, scenic vistas, cultural resources, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Every acre protected helps safeguard the ecological integrity of California’s largest state park and the surrounding Colorado Desert region.

Through year-round educational programs, ABF connects thousands of people annually to the desert’s natural and cultural heritage. Programs include guided hikes, field courses, camping adventures, conservation education, youth programs, citizen science initiatives, lectures, webinars, and special events led by expert naturalists, scientists, and outdoor educators.

One of ABF’s signature programs is Camp Borrego, a fifth-grade outdoor education experience that introduces students to the wonders of the desert through hands-on science, ecology, cultural history, and conservation activities. For many students, Camp Borrego provides their first immersive experience in nature and helps foster a lifelong appreciation for public lands and environmental stewardship.

ABF also supports scientific research, volunteer stewardship projects, and conservation initiatives that benefit both Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding Colorado Desert region. Working in partnership with California State Parks, local communities, researchers, volunteers, and supporters, ABF serves as a vital bridge between people and the desert fostering appreciation, understanding, and long-term stewardship of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
